In this article, we’ll be taking a look at which are the key elements and instruments that constitute the Escolas de Samba’s (how Brazilians call the Samba Schools that parade every year) marching bands and how they are organized to make such a big party roll out so smoothly and beautifully. The reason for that is that it is actually tough to find information in regards to this subject, as there are few or almost no textbooks about it and the learning M.O is basically empyrical: you watch, and you learn. Many people don’t know much about how the Carnival parade works, including Brazilians, believe it. It's called music.Carnival in Rio is arguably the biggest party in the world and no wonder: not only are the costumes fun and colorful, but the music and instrumentation are big, loud, soulful, and will most definitely give you a feeling you’ve never felt before.īut behind all that fun and joy, there’s a lot of work and preparation involved, especially in regards to the musicians.įrom largely known instruments such as tambourines, rattles, and drums to agogôs and cuícas (typical Samba instruments), Carnival music is so rich and full it’s even hard to have a recording that properly translates the feeling and emotion you’re able to experience live. It's called being a part of something bigger than yourself. Seriously. Some people say marching band kids don't have lives. Music is emotional, and if your very soul isn't put into the music, you have nothing. Beyond work, we leave part of ourselves on the field every performance. Therefore, the only thing I can factually present is how MY band functions.End of school: new show announced, band director'swriting it, PRACTICE YOUR HORN.Early July: music starts coming out to members viainternet, memorization begins.Mid/Late July: music rehearsals. There are also lazy bands and lazy football teams. There are hard working bands and hard working football teams. We also love each other, most of the time. Then, we love to run around on a football field and do cool stuff at the same time. As a result, we take pride in what we do.I am our band's Drum Major, and as any member of our marching band will tell you, we love to make music. Understand that participation in the marching band is optional for regular band members, so everybody present WANTS to be. Is that all there is to it? No.I come from a band of 47 members in a rather rural community. What is a band kid? Is it a kid who is in band? Yes.
